AIPAC's millions down the drain again: dramatic victory for progressive candidate in California

Aisha Wahab, a progressive Democrat, defeated Melissa Hernandez, a moderate Democrat, in the special election in California, despite an aggressive multi-million dollar campaign by AIPAC-linked political action committees. Wahab, the first Muslim in the California Senate, will retain her seat.

Aisha Wahab, a progressive Democrat and the first Muslim in the California Senate, won the special election to replace retiring Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell. She defeated Melissa Hernandez, a moderate Democrat, despite an aggressive multi-million dollar campaign against her by AIPAC-linked political action committees. AIPAC's super PAC alone spent about $2.5 million on ads attacking Wahab, without mentioning Israel, but rather accusing her of softening legislation against sex offenders. Wahab, who was asked in April whether the events in Gaza constitute genocide and answered affirmatively, claimed the campaign stemmed from prejudice and racism. Hernandez, in contrast, said Israel has the right to defend itself but the destruction in Gaza went too far. Wahab also received support from Jewish organizations like J Street. The two will face off again in November for the seat.
