A new large-scale study, published in Communications Psychology and conducted by researchers from the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca, reveals that dreams are not random mental noise but a dynamic process influenced by our personality and the world around us. The researchers collected detailed records of thousands of dreams and daily experiences from 287 participants aged 18 to 70 over two weeks, along with data on sleep habits, character, and cognitive abilities. Using AI text analysis software, they found that the brain mixes memories, emotions, and imagination into new stories. People prone to daydreaming experience fragmented dreams, while those who attribute importance to dreams report rich and vivid dreams. Comparison with reports from the COVID-19 lockdown period showed that dreams then contained intense emotions and references to isolation, which moderated with adaptation. The study proves that dreams are a tool for processing stress, memory, and emotions.
