Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed that Iran attempted to assassinate one of his sons, without providing further details. The disclosure came against the backdrop of warnings from security officials about Iranian, Hezbollah and Hamas revenge attempts against Israeli officials and their families, following a series of severe blows to the axis leadership during the war years. The security preparations include ministers, senior political figures, the Chief of Staff, generals and other senior officers. The concern does not end with the end of service, and the possibility that those same officials will continue to be targets even after their retirement is taken into account. In recent months, security has been tightened around ministers and senior figures; for sensitive gatherings, ministers were transported separately and under heavy security. The IDF decided to expand by hundreds of percent the General Staff unit for the protection of dignitaries and to recruit regular soldiers into it for the first time. Netanyahu cited the attempt on his son's life as an example of the danger facing officials and their families, and said he approached the head of the Shin Bet to request proper security for Gadi Eisenkot. The timing of Netanyahu's disclosure gave him an argument in the debate over the security of his family and Eisenkot's security.
