After more than half a year: The escalators at the country's busiest train station will be replaced
Eight months after they were shut down, work will begin to replace the escalators at Tel Aviv HaShalom station. This coming Tuesday, the northern hall will close, and passengers will be directed to the southern hall. The new escalators will be installed by the end of the week, but will not return to operation until receiving an operating permit.
Eight months after being completely shut down, work will begin to replace the escalators at Tel Aviv HaShalom train station, the busiest in Israel. This coming Tuesday at 8:00 PM, the northern passenger hall near the Azrieli Mall will close, and passengers to platform 1 will be directed to the southern hall across the road. Israel Railways clarified that northbound trains will not be canceled. The new escalators will be installed by the end of Saturday, but will not return to immediate operation due to the need for inspections and licensing. The escalators were shut down at the beginning of the year due to recurring malfunctions, and in February 2026 they went out of service. The delay was caused by a lengthy manufacturing and import process for escalators produced abroad to special measurements. For six months, the traffic load fell on the few escalators in the southern hall, creating a bottleneck and long lines, and harming accessibility for people with disabilities, parents with strollers, and the elderly.
