Shin Bet chief David Zini warned last night (Thursday) at the political-security cabinet meeting against the roadmap promoted by the Peace Council for disarming the Gaza Strip, and argued that Hamas views the move as a strategic achievement rather than a step toward genuine disarmament. According to him, Hamas's apparent willingness to disarm does not reflect a real change, but rather a process of deception aimed at buying time until after the elections in Israel. Meanwhile, according to Israeli officials, ministers made clear that Israel will not sign an agreement that limits the IDF's freedom of action. In the meeting, ministers discussed the proposed 14-day preparation phase, during which Israel would be required to refrain from targeted killings. The officials stressed that Israel has not signed or approved the roadmap, and a separate document on deploying a multinational force also remains unsigned. The discussion takes place as the US continues to promote the initiative, but in Jerusalem there is growing opposition due to the concern that it will limit Israel's freedom of action without ensuring Hamas's disarmament.
