The announcement comes against the backdrop of a strong earthquake that struck central and western Colombia earlier today at 7:34 a.m. local time, lasting about 4 minutes. The epicenter was in the town of San José del Palmar in the Chocó department. Heavy damage was caused in the cities of Cali, Armenia, Pereira, and Manizales, and the quake was also felt in Bogotá. The death toll stands at at least 47, with dozens killed in Pereira and others trapped under rubble. The mayors of Pereira and Manizales confirmed the damage, and the governor of Chocó reported many injured and significant damage in Quibdó.
