A year after his martyrdom.. Anas al-Sharif present in voice and image

On the first anniversary of the martyrdom of journalist Anas al-Sharif, the Journalists' Bloc in Gaza held a vigil in front of a large picture of him, where his brother Ahmad stood. Anas was martyred on August 10, 2025, in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a tent for journalists near the al-Shifa Medical Complex, along with six other journalists. Anas continued his coverage from northern Gaza despite the danger, conveying scenes of bombardment and destruction. His brother affirms that his voice is still present in people's memory, and that his mission has not ended.

On the first anniversary of the martyrdom of journalist Anas al-Sharif, the Journalists' Bloc in Gaza held a vigil in front of a large picture of him, where his brother Ahmad stood. A year has passed since Anas's absence, but his image remains present, as does his voice in the memory of those who followed his coverage of the war of extermination, and his transmission of scenes of bombardment, destruction, starvation, and forced displacement in the northern Gaza Strip. Ahmad tells the newspaper "Filastin" that people have not forgotten his brother, and that his legacy remains among them: "Anas, people remember him all the time, no one has forgotten him.. everyone came to remember him, and all the people around us talk about his good legacy." From the early days of the war, Anas remained in the northern Strip, in one of the most bombed and targeted areas of Gaza, and continued his journalistic work despite the danger, threats, and campaigns against him because of the images and testimonies he conveyed. Journalist Ahmad Hamdan recalls via platform X an aspect of that situation, when he once asked Anas to take a rest, and he replied: "By God, I am tired, Ahmad.. I wish to rest." Photographer Mahmoud Shalha also recalls Anas's attachment to his children and his longing for them. But fatigue did not stop him, and he continued coverage until August 10, 2025, when an Israeli airstrike targeted a tent for journalists near the al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City, martyring Anas al-Sharif alongside Al Jazeera correspondent Muhammad Qreiqea, photographers Ibrahim Zaher and Muhammad Nofal, and colleagues Moamen Aliwa and Muhammad al-Khalidi. The martyrdom of Anas al-Sharif was not an isolated incident; more than 250 journalists have been martyred by occupation fire since the start of the aggression on October 7, 2023, an unprecedented toll in the modern history of journalistic work. Ahmad says his brother wanted his message to reach the whole world, but he left without seeing the response he awaited. He adds: "He wanted to deliver his message to the whole world, no one answered his message." He believes Anas paid his life as a price for this message, saying: "Anas sacrificed his life for the people of Gaza and its children, to expose the occupation's crimes in Gaza." A year after his martyrdom, Ahmad believes his brother's mission has not ended, and that his voice has passed to the journalists who continued to carry the pen and camera. He says: "Anas's voice is in every journalist's pen and camera and everywhere." He concludes: "God willing, the journalists will continue the path until the occupation ends."
