Initial reports also emerged of an attack on an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. These events take place against the backdrop of escalating tensions between the US and Iran. Earlier, Washington struck Iran's oil network linked to the financing of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). As a result of the operation, three tankers of the 'shadow fleet' were disabled: M/T Downy near Kharg Island and M/T Stark 1 in the Jask area. Both vessels sustained serious damage. The 'shadow fleet' allows Tehran to circumvent international sanctions and maintain oil exports; its scale is estimated in billions of dollars. In response, Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf threatened that continued US strikes could endanger American energy companies and regional infrastructure. Iran also announced an expansion of attacks on US military facilities in the region, as part of the 31st stage of Operation 'Lightning', sending missiles and drones at targets in Kuwait and the UAE.
