A petition on Change.org gathered over 1,100 signatures in just over a week, including at least 300 from victims' family members. The organizers claim that Adams' presence would be 'an affront to the memory of nearly 3,000 murdered' due to his statements and associations with figures they say downplayed Islamic terrorism. Among the allegations: his refusal to condemn the chant 'Globalize the Intifada', his ties with Imam Siraj Wahhaj, his appointment of attorney Ramsey Kassem who represented terrorism defendants, and his defense of preacher Anwar al-Awlaki. In response, a spokesperson for the memorial site said the organization keeps the ceremony out of politics, and Adams' office stated he intends to attend the ceremony 'with pride'.
