21 years after the disengagement: the last evacuated settlement has been reestablished
30 families have moved into the settlement of Homesh in the northern West Bank, 21 years after its evacuation as part of the disengagement plan. Minister Bezalel Smotrich and council head Yossi Dagan participated in the ceremony. The move completes the reestablishment of four settlements evacuated in 2005.
30 families moved into the settlement of Homesh in the northern West Bank this morning (Thursday), 21 years after its evacuation under the 2005 disengagement plan. This is the last of four settlements evacuated at that time to be reestablished, following the reestablishment of Ganim, Sa-Nur, and Chomesh. Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Samaria Council head Yossi Dagan participated in an official ceremony. Smotrich said the move is not irreversible, and that another government could harm the settlement enterprise. The move received significant impetus from Smotrich, who stripped powers from the Civil Administration and led to the repeal of the disengagement law. According to the Samaria Council, the core group consists mostly of families from central Israel and Tel Aviv, initiated by graduates of religious Zionist yeshivas and reserve soldiers released from the Swords of Iron war. The settlement expansion forces the IDF to prioritize defensive missions and move bases to the northern West Bank.
